The airport that shouldn't exist
NOC is the perfect airport for a page about happy wrong turns. It was the idea of a local priest, Monsignor James Horan, who wanted to fly pilgrims straight to the nearby Knock Shrine. Critics called the chosen spot a “foggy, boggy hill” and the whole plan unrealistic.
It was built anyway, opening in 1985. Four decades later that improbable hill handled its busiest year ever — over 946,000 passengers in 2025. A detour nobody believed in, quietly proven right.
